Fellowship in rheumatism and musculoskeletal diseases

Eligibility

To be eligible for the New Horizon Fellowship, applicants must:

  • Be no more than 40 years of age
  • Have an MD degree
  • Be enrolled in a postgraduate training programme with at least 1 year of specialty training in rheumatology, musculoskeletal medicine, orthopaedic surgery or acute/chronic pain management
  • Demonstrate a strong career interest in arthritis and pain
  • Plan to devote 100% of professional time to research
  • Be available to undertake the Fellowship in 2019/2020

Selection criteria

Applications will be reviewed by a New Horizon Fellowship Committee composed of several internationally respected experts in the fields of arthritis and pain. In their evaluations, the New Horizon Fellowship Committee will consider:

  • Qualifications of the applicant, including the applicant’s research experience and training, and evidence of his or her commitment to a career in arthritis and pain
  • Evidence of the applicant’s interest, initiative and ability to conduct original research in arthritis and pain
  • Previous research experience including any fellowships, awards or prizes won
  • Research papers published and presentations given

Conditions of the Fellowship

Financial administration

The amount of each grant it €15.000,- for a six months fellowship period. The funding for the New Horizon Fellowship will be sent directly to the hosting institution. The institution will then be responsible for administration of the Fellowship funding.

Use of funding

This award is intended to be the Fellow’s primary salary support, equivalent to the usual and customary salaries of individuals in comparable positions at the host institution, and will also cover travel costs.

Final report

The Fellows must submit a final report to the New Horizon Fellowship Committee at the end of the Fellowship, discussing their research project. They may also be required to deliver an oral presentation of their research to New Horizon Fellowship members.

Publications

All publications (as well as abstracts of presentations at scientific meetings) that result from a project supported by this New Horizon Fellowship must carry the following acknowledgement: “This research was conducted while (name of Fellow) was a New Horizon Fellow.”
